Still bad at marketing

Alright, so those blog posts I promised… apparently I kinda lied. Not all that good at keeping up with it all. So keep me honest, people!

Anyhow, had a new show on Saturday, it was pretty good I thought. Putting a show together for this week will probably prove more challenging. Two weeks ago I put together enough material for a show plus another half.

I have something percolating that may result in something wonderful in the very near future, however I also have some potential news that will negate all that. Right now all I can tell you is that I have two potential things going on, one of which could cancel the other out… Spoilers!

Show #39 (or 40 depending on how you reckon these things)

Went fairly well. The music was a series of solid choices. The commentary… wasn’t as good as I’d hoped. As I’ve been told, I’m the only person who thinks my show is bad, so perhaps I need to allow the opinions of others to influence what I see in the mirror. Arguably I’m not doing the show for my own health, it’s for the listeners, so as long as they like it that’s what is important.

Looking forward to the next installment, scheduled for May 19, 2-4 pm ET at http://radiofreekokomo.org, so tune in and be entertained!

It’s a whole new paradigm!

…and if I had a pair of dimes, I’d have twenty cents. Instead I haven’t even got two nickels to rub together. But hey, that’s just my two cents.

Somehow that joke feels very Groucho Marx-ish. Perhaps because it makes me think of his bit in… Animal Crackers? About the seven-cent nickel. I’m a Marxist-Lennonist though. That’s Groucho and John, not Karl and Vladimir.

No Soviet flair (this week anyhow) but I’ve got some songs about geekdom, classical music, and of all things, bowling… Yes, bowling. I’m sure you don’t want to miss that…

Anyhow, don’t want to burn myself out before I do this thing. So listen Saturday, 2-4pm ET, at http://radiofreekokomo.org, and feel free to interact with me on Twitter while the show’s on, that’s the fun part :-)

Thinking about Saturday’s show

Definitely doing a theme on geekdom. Not sure what else I’ll do, but I broke down and made a Pandora Radio account so I could get some inspiration, and it has been working so far. I realized that I have to start thinking very differently about some things if I’m going to be a successful radio rube.

As always, thanks to everyone who follows my trials and tribulations as a guy trying to learn how to do something new and interesting. And if you ever have anything constructive to tell me that you think will help me out, I would love to hear it, feel free to put it in the comments, or hit me up on Twitter.

And listen to the new show at 3pm ET Saturday at Radio Free Kokomo! (rerun of a past show at 2pm ET)

Thanks all,
-T.J.

Alright, I’m bad at blogging

I’ll admit this. Freely.

The thing here is I’ve got a renewed feeling of wanting to get my radio show more attention. Those loyal listeners among you will notice that I kinda go in waves. So I’m working on building up some sort of schedule of things throughout the week. A post here on a regular basis, encouraging people to comment, interact with folks, and so on. I get it, it’s just very very difficult for me, since I’m pretty well flying solo on this.

So thanks to everyone for your ongoing support of Wacky on the Weekend, and I look forward to interacting with you folks on a regular basis about the show, and getting back to doing LIVE SHOWS! I’ve got the system partially set up to do so, which means live shows are coming soon, and I can’t wait.

So in the near future, the plan is…

  1. Live shows, Saturday afternoons, 2-4pm ET (with reruns throughout the week)
  2. Guests live in studio (We’ve been doing this with the recorded shows on an as-possible basis. It’s more fun with another person here.)
  3. Remote guests, via Skype or something similar. I have this aspiration that eventually I might get someone extra cool to co-host a show with me. No, I don’t have anyone lined up yet, but getting the tech in place first is going to preclude actually getting a guest.

So that’s that. I need to make a new poster too, they printed out a bazillion copies of the old one, which is woefully out of date by now.

My life as a radio guy

This is mostly for the benefit of @geekyjules but I’ll put it out there for anyone to read, not like I’m hiding any big government secrets here.

About three years ago a friend of mine was starting the wheels in motion to get a radio station at his college: Indiana University Kokomo. He was hoping an FM license would be possible, but settled for a web radio station for now. Anyhow they got their station set up, loaded in some music for an auto-player, and started recruiting people to do shows. Since my wife was actually a student at the school for a time, she started her own show, and one week I filled in for her. After that, I asked the station manager, the same guy who was responsible for putting the station together in the first place, if I could have a show. This was in February of 2011, and since then I’ve done about 25 shows.

The focus of my show is generally comedy and novelty music, much in the way of Doctor Demento. The goal was always to push it into something with guests and so on, and have it be a little more talky and a little less musicy, as the few times I’ve had someone to co-host with, it’s always been a smoother ride.

For some examples of bits of my show, we’ve had “Some Contestants May Receive…”, an announcer-style reading of items you wouldn’t want to win on a game show, and “consumable of the week,” where a mystery item is provided to me for my consumption and I talk about it for a bit, and follow it up with a song about food in general. I’ve also done brief poetry-reading style bits of “Excuses,” a publication I’ve written off and on for a long time.

So my questions are thus, Ms. Jules: Do I sound potentially useful to you, what do you need someone to do, can it be done from afar, and… uhm… so on.

Please and thank you,
-T.J.

Wasn’t expecting this so soon…

Today the Raspberry Pi people posted the pinout for the GPIO port on the board. Fortunately I don’t have the need for too terribly many pins I don’t think, so I shouldn’t have to re-program any of the specialized pins.

A friend suggested using I2C, but I’m not that smart. Yet.

Get out there and sell this thing!

So I do a radio show once a week on a web-radio station based out of Indiana University Kokomo. Been doing it since February if you can believe that. It’s a comedy show, I tell some jokes, some stories, and play funny or bizarre music. If you think this is the kind of thing you’d enjoy, then I’ll tell you how to listen to it (All times Eastern)

Saturday, 2pm: previous week’s show
Saturday, 3pm: new show
Mon-Thurs, 4pm: alternating the previous two weeks’ shows

Listen at http://radiofreekokomo.org

Now here’s the thing. I’d like you to listen. I really would, that would be fabulous. What would be even better is if you like what you hear, that you spread it around a bit. Tell people on Twitter, Facebook, shout it from the rooftops, leaflet-bombing, whatever you have to do. That’s what would mean a lot to me. So give it a listen if you think it sounds like the sort of thing you’d enjoy, and tell your friends (or enemies if it’s that bad) and send me a tweet (@Cantplaypiano), e-mail (radio atzors cantplaypiano.com), or leave a comment here to say hi.

Thanks, have a great week, and enjoy the show.

Well, my life is now complete.

I’ve just been called a slacker by Jeri Ryan, and that makes me so happy I could die.

The plan for the September 17 show

I’m sort of off by a day, but here goes. This week’s show:

2:00pm: New previously-recorded show.
3:00pm: Rerun of an old show. (Perhaps the first show? That’d be fun.)

I’ll be busy this Saturday from what I can tell. And that’s the plan.
